What the Heart wrote to the Body

By Gideon Chukwuemeka Ogbonna

Dear Body,

This is the heart writing to you. Sometimes I wish I was Kendrick Lamar and you were Rihanna, so I can say to you Bitch, Sit down. Be humble.

And here is why.

You have been trained to be defiant, never to listen. Just like Rihanna, you are always out to Work, Work, Work. Because you have targets to meet. Bills to pay. Mouths to feed. Then you forget that vehicles also come with brakes. And that is how you overeat to keep up with the demands for energy, or you smoke and drink alcohol to ‘forget those worries.’ And what does that make me? That poor staff that works overtime to keep up with the boss’s lifestyle. Not fair.

I am getting weary already. As they say in Nigeria, body no be wood. I am not sure I can keep up with this. I checked recently and the arteries and veins are getting weak too, narrower even. Blood pressure is becoming higher than normal – hypertension. And you recall the overeating that you were doing earlier? It is haunting you now because you did not realize that you should regulate your salt intake. Now recall all the Pringles and Pizza and salted nuts you’ve stuffed yourself with. You see how the little sweetness and carelessness of life are now the ghosts in your sleep.

Painful thing is, this is how you implicate me (every time) in a myriad of cardiovascular diseases: hypertensive heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction (heart attack). It is exhausting.

I know that life is sweet, but all I am saying is that you can regulate this sweetness. I know you want to live that baby girl lifestyle. It is a good thing. But please, sometimes watch sitcoms. Laugh on Facebook subs and trends. Drink water. Listen to the wonders that are Adele’s lyrics. Just sit down…be humble.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Yours in Service,
The Heart.
